Students Kick Against Covenant's Rating As Nigeria's Best Varsity

A recent webometrics rating of top Nigerian universities placed Covenant University, Ota, Ogun state as Nigeria’s best university but this has been seriously rejected by several Nigerian students.
According to the ranking, Covenant University overthrew Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU; University of Ibadan, UI; University of Lagos, UNILAG and University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, as Nigeria’s best institution.
But some students, in a survey conducted by Naij,com, have questioned the yardstick for the placement of the institutions.
In a quick response to the question, a certain Jade Olufemi from the Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH, said, “layelaye” meaning, “impossible”.
“How did they come about their conclusion and on what grounds did they place Covenant University ahead of other top institutions in the country?” she queried further.
While arguing that products of Covenant University are not always the best in their respective fields, a student at the University of Lagos, UNILAG berated the rating, adding that students of Covenant University would be surprised with the recent twist.
Simbiat Adenola, a final year Business Administration student of the institution retorted that, “I am a little bit confused here. Is it the same Covenant University in Ota? Or is there another one elsewhere that I probably am not aware of? I have a few friends from the school who have admitted that things are really rosy for them.
“They write examinations under air conditioners, they are being pampered like babies, yet, some funny website rated them as Nigeria’s best University? That is real nonsense.
“Let them come to UNILAG and attempt 150 objective questions under one hour or theory questions with many sub questions under one and a half hours before they are acclaimed the best in Nigeria“.
Ayodele Ogungbeni, a student of the University of Ibadan, UI, claimed that since the rating was not carried out by the Nigeria University Commission, NUC, it may not have been thorough.
“Or how do you explain the fact that Covenant is above UI and other top schools in the country? This is debatable because I have never seen that school as one with such great records.
“Where do you even place OAU? How can a Private University in Nigeria be better than a Federal-Government owned institution? With their products, it can be easily judged.
“Are their products the best in the country? There is a compromise somewhere, my brother. Covenant University cannot be Nigeria’s best tertiary institution,” the 300-level Guidance Counseling student offered.
Another student who spoke vehemently against the new development, refused to be drawn into the comparison battle as he stated categorically that his school, University of Ilorin, UNILORIN is Nigeria’s best tertiary institution irrespective of what any statistics presents.
David Adeolu a part-two student of the institution in Kwara state, North-central Nigeria wondered if Covenant University was rated based on their products, structure or academic excellence.
He said: “by their products, you shall know them. UNILORIN is Nigeria’s most sought-after university. We have a scheduled time frame which everybody is sure to follow accordingly and the only Government-owned institution in Nigeria that does not go on strike.
“Maybe those qualities I mentioned are not enough, what was the basis of the rating? On what grounds were they made the best in Nigeria? The products of UNILORIN remain the most outstanding in the society. What else does one need to confirm our superiority?
“Even if we are not Nigeria’s best university, as of today, we are among the top three in the country.
Recall that after the University rankings were announced, the vice-chancellor of the university, Prof Charles Ayo, said the institution would not rest on its oars until it becomes at least 10th on the African continent.
It was recently proclaimed that the Bishop Oyedepo-owned University have plans to reduce their tuition soon in a bid to attract more students who would like to benefit from the quality education it offers.
