APC says they cannot choose principal officers for NASS

FORMER Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters to former President Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) “cannot choose principal officers for the National Assembly”, because party supremacy has a little role to play in the affairs of the NASS.

He also stated that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot choose who to work as principal officers of the National Assembly, noting that “it is the constitutional right and responsibility of legislators to choose who should be their presiding officers.”

Yakassai stated these while speaking to newsmen at the weekend, saying: “I think there is a mistake about the issue of party supremacy; there is an area where party supremacy works and there are also many areas where the party must not insist on its supremacy.”

He, however, said a party, in order to satisfy the yearning and aspiration of its supporters nationwide, could prescribe the zoning of the principals of the National Assembly officers.

He noted that it was inappropriate for the party to name some individuals that would occupy the positions, saying that it is contrary to the position of the constitution of the country.

“Party supremacy cannot apply in the current issues regarding the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives, as such supremacy cannot override the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Buhari has no choice but to work with the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and it is not his business to say who would be the presiding officers that he would work with in the National Assembly.

Yakassai further added that the president needed the cooperation of the Senate in particular and the National Assembly in general for the administration to stay.
