Nelson Mandela’s grandson, who can’t be
named until he appears in court, was arrested for allegedly raping a
15-year-old girl, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Daily Sun reports that the incident took place at a popular restaurant last Friday in Greenside. The girl’s family spokesperson confirmed the incident saying: “Apparently she went to the toilet and he grabbed her and raped her inside one of the toilets.”
When the girl’s father discovered what had happpened he tried to open a criminal case, Winnie Mandela, South African politician and former Nelson Mandela’s wife, asked him to give her family time to deal with the crime but instead sent her bodyguard pretending to be a police officer to settle the matter.
“Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime. Children can’t just be raped and then everything is alright. The girl is young and doesn’t even drink,” the spokesman expressed the family’s anger by the way they were treated by the police and the Mandelas.
A case of rape was opened on 14 August and the police investigation started. It would be recalled that a year ago another Madiba’s grandson Mandla Mandela, was convicted of assault after an altercation with a teacher during which he drew a firearm.
Nelson Mandela died on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection, . He died at around at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, surrounded by his family.
