Lagos Groups Urge Buhari To Continue Anti-Corruption War
A solidarity march took place in Lagos today, September 10 in support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption.
Some of the groups that participated in the march included the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), the Trade Union Congress, the National Youth Council, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other affiliated workers’ labour groups.
According to Comrade Chinedu Bosah, the organising secretary of Democratic Socialist Movement, the protest was also organised simultaneously in other key states of the federation.
The protesters, numbering more than 200 marched from Ikeja to the governor’s office displaying placards that bore various inscriptions showing support for President Buhari and urging him to extend his blanket of investigation to states and local governments.
The groups said the effort of the president was being thwarted by some corrupt Nigerians. They insisted that if these people are allowed to continue with their effort, it would affect the whole country. They added that the Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode must also join in the war against corruption.
The chairman of CDHR Lagos state chapter, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak speaking exclusively to Naij.com said for the first time, Nigeria had a president that was willing to put an end to the activities of corrupt persons. He said he was happy with the work already done by the president and was optimistic that it would get better.
He urged the Lagos state government to shun corruption, noting that the state seemed to be allowing corruption to operate. He cited the example of the operation of touts popularly called agbero in the state saying that it was because of the financial returns to the government that has made the government tolerate their activities.
In his response, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who was represented by Mr Tunji Bello, the secretary to the Lagos state government thanked the groups for showing support to President Buhari and his anti-corruption stance.
He said: “All the messages you have brought on this anti-corruption crusade must be delivered to President Buhari”.
He added that the state was committed to participating in the fight against corruption too.
