Main PageOsun Students Hold Deputy Governor Hostage
On Monday, September 21, students of tertiary institutions owned by Osun state government staged a massive protest in Osogbo against the prolonged strike by their lecturers.

The Punch reports that the lecturers of the institutions embarked on a strike over unpaid salaries, inadequate staff and non-remittance of their pension deduction made by the state government.
The students who were taking part in the protest were mostly from Osun State Polytechnic in Iree, Osun State College of Technology in Esa Oke, Colleges of Education in Ila and Ilesa.
The students started the protest from Olaiya and trekked to Abere, the state secretariat, singing anti-government songs.
At around 11am, they arrived at the place and laid siege to the main gate of the state secretariat. After a short time, Titi Laoye-Tomori, the deputy governor, was driven to the secretariat but the students prevented her convoy from gaining entry.
Some of the irate students laid on the ground in front of her car and some laid at the back making it difficult for the deputy to go inside or to turn back. Laoye-Tomori’s efforts to calm down the crowd failed as they held her hostage in their midst.
Some of the students had earlier attacked Lukman Adekitan, the permanent secretary in the ministry of education, by poking his stomach.
Meanwhile, Lukman Adekitan, the chairperson of National Association of Nigerian Students in Osun state, said that the students were tired of staying at home due to the strike in some institutions.
Therefore, he called on Rauf Aregbesola, the governor of the state, to address the issues raised by the lecturers as soon as possible.
Last week, lecturers under the aegis of Council of Academic Staff Unions of Osun State Owned Tertiary Institutions stormed the Osun state house of assembly to protest nonpayment of their salaries for the past eight months.
Armed with placards lecturers sang anti-government songs and submitted “Save Our Souls letter”.
