NPFL Week 35 Round-up: Giwa FC Moves Second





The NPFL week 35 saw Ifeanyi Ubah and Heartland contest a tense oriental derby while Giwa FC has over taken Warri Wolves to move second on the log.
At the bottom of the log, Kwara Utd dropped into the relegation zone after a 1 – 0 loss to Enyimba International thanks to captain Chinedu Uzoji’s goal.

Top of the log teams
Enyimba’s win at the Aba international stadium sees them consolidate that position at the top of the table. Warri Wolves will play their 35 fifth match of the season against Lobi Stars of Markurdi later today.
If Worri Wolves win in Markudi, they will climb above Giwa FC to move into second spot. Giwa sit second with 60 points while Warri Wolves have 59 points. Enyimba are top with 65 points.

Sunshine Stars of Akure’s poor form continued with a 2 – 1 loss at Akwa United. The Owena babes were the best team in the first stanza of the Glo NPFL but have been poor since they defeated El-Kanemi 5 – 0 on match day 26.
Kennedy Boboye’s men are fifth with 53 points behind Wikki Tourist who have 57 points. Sunshine however one outstanding game against Ifeanyi Ubah.
Sharks defeated Shooting Starts of Akure 2 – 1. Frederick Obomate’s scored a second half double to give Sharks the win to move them to 14th on the log with 42 points from 35 games while 3SC are 10th on the log with 49 points from 35 matches.




Oriental Derby – Ifeanyi Ubah 2 – 1 Heartland (match report)
Beverly Hills Hotel Nnewi, the home of Ifeanyi Ubah FC was a busy site as fans of Ifeanyi Ubah FC (The Anambra warriors) trooped in to support their team, in a match against their neighbors Heartland FC of Owerri. A derby match called the ‘Oriental Derby’.
The match kicked off at exactly 4pm Nigerian time, and immediately, the home team started scrabbling to put one goal pass the goal of their opponents.

It was a cagey opening moment as both teams found it difficult to break each other down and take control of the game.
The homers however settled down faster and started making incursions into their visitors’ area and Stephen Chukwude almost gave the home side the lead but he clipped his own leg and fell after brilliantly dancing his way into the box.

The pressure from the home team paid off in the 27th minute when a corner kick swung into the box was handled by a Heartland player prompting the center referee Femi Samson to point to the spot. Ifeanyi Edeh calmly converted to give the homers the lead.

The Naze Millionaires would not go down without a fight and started pressing their hosts. Fortune Omoniwari struck a scintillating free kick from outside the box and an audacious volley by Emmanuel Matthew from about 30 yards came close to levelling things.
Heartland returned in the second half with a lot of intensity and almost got a goal in the early minutes of the second half but Emeka Ogbugh wasted their best chance when he only needed to tap the ball into the net after a good run by Zoumana Doumbia to set him up.
Ebere Obi then made a fantastic one hand save in the 77th minute to deny the homers from doubling their lead. He made several clearance and interceptions to keep hope alive for his side.
Speaking to journalists after the match, head coach of Ifeanyi Ubah FC, Mr John Obuh, when answering questions about the officiating by match officials said: “It is a strange very one, he was actually upright taking care of the two sides. In many situation, I was almost getting angry with what happened in some of his decisions against us, and before you know it, he will take same decision against our opponent, so i just think it’s part of him.”

The manager of Heartland FC Berthel Orji said:  “Sincerely speaking, if this is the way the referees will be officiating, I wonder if any team will win an away match”
He added: “I have never complained about referee before as a coach, but this one, I must complain about it. The penalty that he awarded is highly questionable, also there are many times my boys were fouled directly in front of him and also he ignored them”
Relegation Battlers
Dolphins of Port-Harcourt rose to 16th on the log from 35 matches after they beat El Kanemi Warriors 2-0 at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, for their second consecutive league win this season. They now have 41 points.
Bayelsa FC defeated Abia Warrior 1 – 0 but remain 19th spot with three matches left to play. Bayelsa are seven points from safety with 34 points.
The teams in the relegation zone from 20th to 16th; Taraba FC, Bayelsa Utd, Kwara Utd, Lobi Stars.

Lobi Stars vs Warri Wolves – Lobi Stars of Markudi play Warri Wolves later today Thursday, October 29 at 4pm.
Taraba FC vs Nasarawa Utd – The match which was supposed to be played on Wednesday was abandoned as Nasarawa failed to show up.
