The Edo NLC fumes over non- payment of council workers
The non-payment of council workers in Edo State has taken
a new dimension as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has
vowed to shut down the state if the government failed to
pay the workers' salaries at the expiration of a 14-day
ultimatum given by the congress.
The NLC chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Ademokun, stated
this while addressing over 7, 000 council workers from 15
council areas across the state during the weekly mass protest
at the labour secretariat, Benin City.
Comrade Ademokun, while addressing the aggrieved
workers, remarked that the battle was no longer that of the
council workers under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of
Local Government Employees (NULGE), but a labour affair,
promising to use several weapons to get the workers' paid.
"But the idea of workers working for you and not being paid
is another evil. When Adams Oshiomhole was the NLC
president, nobody will try or dare to do that to workers, we
have given the government a 14-day ultimatum and
immediately after the expiration of the ultimatum, we are
going to collapse the entire system.
"Not only that, we will make sure that the council chairmen
are sent packing, they pay their contractors, pay their
security allowances, but refuse to pay their workers. These
chairmen should be blamed for the non-payment of the
salaries," he said.
Meanwhile, the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly,
Honourable Victor Edoror, has admitted that the non-
payment of salaries of local government workers was an
embarrassment to the state as he solicited Federal
Government's support to bailout government from the mess.
The House also invited all the 15 council chairmen to
explain the rationale behind non- payment of the salaries
that accrued to nine months.
The Speaker hinted that a worker deserved his or her wage
as he described the non-payment as embarrassing and
uncalled for.
"An injury to one is an injury to all, I must express our deep
concern, I must tell you that Edo State House of Assembly is
strongly concerned, we are aware that there is paucity of
funds as far as this country is concerned now, but that is not
a yardstick to measure that a worker should not get his or
her own wage.
"We are here and I can authoritatively say that all the
chairmen will be invited and they are going to tell us the
reason why they have not been able to measure up to their
responsibilities.
"Though, I have my own personal friends and sisters and
brothers among you, we are not happy with the situation. If
you will agree with me the people that managed the
economy of this country over the years have destroyed the
economy completely. We will, as a matter of fact put all
machinery in motion to make sure that this matter gets to a
halt. You will all get your salaries," he added.
Meanwhile, the president of the Nigeria Union of Local
Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Young
Ilenikhena, who led the protest, appealed to the workers
based on the assurance from the Speaker, adding that the
union would not relent until their salaries were paid.
