1-4 Million Children Displaced Due To Insurgency - UNICEF
The United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) estimates that Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, particularly in the northeast region and other neighbouring countries has made 1.4 million children to flee their homes.
UNICEF this on Friday, September 18, while also adding that due to the rise in insurgency attacks in the past five months; about 500,000 children have been displaced.
Chad, Niger and Cameroon have joined forces with Nigeria to combat Boko Haram fighters who have been trying to establish an independent Islamist state in the Northeastern Nigeria. It was reported that while thousands have been killed, millions have also been displaced by the insurgents.
UNICEF stated in a statement that “In northern Nigeria alone, nearly 1.2 million children – over half of them under 5 years old – have been forced to flee their homes. An additional 265,000 children have been uprooted in Cameroon, Chad and Niger”.
According to PM News, the group has turned to raiding villages for food and supplies due to heavy counter terrorism operations that has seen their food and drug supplies intercepted.
UNICEF said that over 315,000 thousand children have been vaccinated against measles while also providing schooling and counseling to children.
The humanitarian organisation said that it received only 32 per cent of the money required this year for humanitarian operations.
Amongst the children affected by the insurgency are the more than 200 girls that were kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Borno state more than a year ago.
